Quick verdict
Best overall: May–June and September. Comfortable temperatures (12–18 °C), longer daylight hours, manageable crowds, and hotel prices below peak summer rates.
Avoid if you hate crowds: August. The Edinburgh Fringe (the world's largest arts festival) and the Military Tattoo run simultaneously, pushing hotel prices to their highest and filling the city centre. It is spectacular if you're there for the events — plan months ahead.
Best value: November–February (excluding Christmas markets and Hogmanay). Low hotel rates, authentic local atmosphere, and Edinburgh's Gothic architecture looks its best under a grey winter sky.
Hogmanay (31 Dec): One of the world's great New Year celebrations. Book accommodation six months ahead — rooms sell out fast and prices triple.
